Alternative facts. Post-truth. Lies.
It's a new world out there for those of us searching for an element of trustworthiness in our media. There's a disease in our news feeds and it's spilling over into public life, making facts seem harder to find these days than gold.
For some of us, the latest American Presidential Race has been the thing that opened our eyes to the rising tide of falsehoods, but the issue is far bigger and more widespread than the race for, and the holding of, the US Presidency. Our whole awareness of the world is being swamped by disinformation, either purposely or through the reflexive clicking of mouse buttons.
There is danger in this culture of alternative facts. Much more than most of us realize. Our democratic way of life and our security risk being crumbled away under the watch of society's disinterested gaze. Though it can feel at times like the situation is hopeless, we need not be doomed to lose our grip on the truth forever.
With its explanation of how the current technological environment places pressure upon the media, 'Lies, Damned Lies & Alternative Facts', shines a light onto how we should (and how we should not) engage with the news providers of today. Readers will come away with an understanding that allows them to become more informed, discerning and intelligent consumers of the news.

As a high school teacher myself, I am continually confronted with the challenge of teaching research skills when so much research is now done online. Students, more often than not, lack the critical thinking required to distinguish the real from the over-abundance of satirical (or straight-up fake) news. This work should be essential reading for adults seeking to guide students and children in safely navigating through the convincing entertainment provided by well-produced satire along with the irresponsible, unethical and sensationalist reporting of "news" so common now amongst mainstream media outlets.Product details

Lies Damned Lies and Alternative Facts A Truthseeker Guide to Navigating PostTruth Society edition by SL McMillan Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
A timely thought provoking book raising issues we all need to be aware of. With the abundance of on line information readily available and easily accessed, this book provides sensible advice in a well written, thoroughly researched and easily understood manner. Thoroughly recommended.
What I thought was going to be a balanced discussion of the lying by the Democrats, the Republicans and biased reportage by the media was a total disappointment. This "book" is a pathetic hatchet-job of Donald Trump and his whole administration. The author even goes to Obama henchmen to get opinions about the Trump administration's veracity. Of course that's a group that knows a thing or two about lying.
I was hooked from the first page. Excellent read. Extremely well written. Really enjoyed the candidness and ability to address the seriousness of this topic of fake news that effects us all. Very thought provoking.
The author highlights the need for all of us to check and double check statements that are presented as 'facts'. In our digital world where anyone can post information it is important to carefully consider whether an article, post or blog is in fact true - not something we want to be true.
Readable, researched with annotations.
Thought provoking.
Today's fast paced digital world is so confusing that it is hard to know what to believe. So much is presented as truth and yet can not be further from it. It is hard enough to navigate this confusions without trying to teach our children how to be more discerning. In a clear, amusing and entirely readable way, the author demonstrates how we are being manipulated into accepting untruths as the truth and demonstrates what action we can take as we shake off our lethargy. It's time to care people......there are no such things as "alternative facts".
